I’m a Remote Work Geek!
Hi! I’m happy that you found this little corner of the World Wide Web! ! My name is Vera Lakmaker, A Rotterdammert who currently lives in Antwerp, Belgium. I currently work as Head of Remote at Gameye. You might have noticed that I call myself an “Information Geek” on social media and on my personal website. What makes “Remote Work Geek” different from “Information Geek”?
Well, I have a bunch of ideas for a blog series. I imagine that it would be more clear if all the remote work-related blog posts have their own dedicated space on the internet. Therefore, Remote Work Geek is the latest and newest project under the “Information Geek” umbrella.
What do I do:
My CV consists of a wide range of jobs and activities. Back in 2013, I started working as a volunteer games journalist. I worked for different websites like ng-gamer.nl, eurogamer.nl and twodashstash.com. My activities ranged from game reviews to in-depth articles about history and games (I wrote a thesis about historical After-Action Reports in Europa Universalis IV). I had my own podcast called BetaWaveRadio in which we listened to video game music and talked to indie developers. During this time, I also branched out doing marketing, PR, community management and project management for several indie game-related projects. In 2015, my money dried up, and I started to work. I worked in customer service, made my way towards support engineering and Linux engineering.
Back in 2020, I realised that more technical jobs are not my strong suit. I like computers and nerding out about them, but not enough to make a life-long career about it. I’m a social butterfly, I wanted to work with people. In September 2020, Gameye reached out. They were looking for someone who keeps the team together, happy and healthy. That is how I received this amazing job title and I got thrown into the world of remote work.
Over the past year, I’ve fallen further in love with remote work and I have had the opportunity to learn a lot. There is still so much to learn out there, I still often feel like a newbie.
What is this blog about:
t is a blog about remote work! Or rather, a blog with my ramblings on the subject 😉 The goal of this blog is to provide a place to share information, learnings and opinions about remote work with a personal touch. There are many great websites out there that offer incredible news, guides and resources about remote work.
The primary focus is not to provide similar resources (even though they might overlap). I read a lot about remote work and in order to give those learnings a place in my head, I need to write about it. Remote Work Geek is that place 🙂
I still feel like a greenhorn when it comes to working remotely. I’m not by a means an expert. There are many people that are far more knowledgeable than me. Nevertheless, if you’re interested in gaining insights and new learnings, then you’re welcome to join the ride with me.
I hope you enjoy reading this blog, and thanks again for visiting.
